Today’s Special

This was the first thing I ever saw on cable TV.  Yes, kids, I can remember the day we went from 4 channel antenna TV to getting a giant cable box that sat on the set.  After the installer left we flipped through the channels and when we landed on this my brother and I shouted, “THAT ONE!  STOP!”  We had never seen kids’ programming DURING THE DAY, let alone a WEEKDAY.
Years later I would find myself an employee of Target, working overnight, unloading the truck and putting out the merchandise.  I would often pretend I lived there and had talking mice and the manequins came to life whenever I wasn’t around and they took off their hats go to work.
So there’s your second “I’m an old person” story of the day.

OH YAY! I had been wondering what the hell that show from my childhood was called.

I watched the hell out of this as a kid.

A few years back, I was out with some friends, with one person visiting from Australia.  I don’t know how the topic turned to Today’s Special, but we were all trying to explain it to her.  It was at the point when I heard myself say, “And the mouse wore a yellow feather boa” that I realized there was no explanation.
I’ve read that children’s programming has historically been one of Canada’s best exports.
